Profanatorium, a new and rather obscure entity from Spain. Well, Spain… I am aware of the fact that people from Gran Canaria usually do not want to be called Spaniards and geographically they are not located quite near Spain either. But, geography and nationalities aren’t the most important things when we’re listening to music. I am not sure whether or not these individuals are somehow related to Muert/Cryfemal, as I cannot imagine that the Extreme Metal scene in Gran Canaria is that big and besides, Profanatorium’s music is not miles away from Muert’s take on the Black/Death Metal genre either.

For now we’ll take it just as it is, as practically no information on the band seems available anywhere. So, as far as I know ‘Baphomet’s Slaves’ is the band’s first offering and gives us only a glimpse of what Profanatorium is about. In just a mere five minutes we are being served with a very small portion, of which a few more seconds are seized by an intro as well, but it surely tastes like more. Profanatorium is about old school and rotten Black Metal with a very distinct Death Metal bite to it. While the pace is predominantly slow and they make use of an eerie and sinister sounding keyboard, the music has a strong resemblance of what Beherit did on their ‘Drawing Down The Moon’ master piece. Slow, menacing and with an extremely uncanny atmosphere, this little fucker drags you right into the most foul stinking marshes of the underground from around the 1990’s. If you’ll add a bit of Goatlord and very early Profanatica to the mix, you’ll have a very clear picture of what Profanatorium is about. Yet, you should not forget to pour this all in a rehearsal-like production that reinforces the overall experience, this really good just have been an old and forgotten recording from 1990. You can almost smell the mold, the smoke, the stale beer and, of course, the sweat of an old rehearsal basement.

I wish I could tell you that this is just an appetizer for a slightly longer first demo tape through one of the world’s best underground labels, but… I can’t. It is definitely something that would fit just perfectly on demo tape with a good, old-style cut-and-paste cover. Hopefully we’ll see that surfacing one day!
