A few weeks ago I ran into this debut demo by a Greek duo that goes under the name of Necrobaptism. They apparently got together earlier this year and the first result of their creative minds is this self-titled piece that was self-released in digital form through their Bandcamp page. But, as far as I was able to find out, the band has already been reduced to a solo-project by Asotos, here basically already responsible for all of the instruments. A little warning upfront: if you came here because the cover art looks a little goofy, this band’s take on the Black Metal genre is not of a much higher standard.
But, let me be clear straight away, this exercise in total ramshackle Black Metal is charming as hell. In fact it brings me right back to my teenage years where I was fanatically exploring everything that sounded heavy, harsh or abrasive in any way. I came along stuff like Haat, Ichneutic, Akitsa, Bone Awl, Vordr and Ildjarn that really tickled my fancy. It was all simple and ugly and brimming with primal energy. That straight up Punk-attitude of the music that allows mistakes and irregularities to be part of the whole experience was right up my alley. And it still is. Necrobaptism is one of the few bands I have ever encountered that truly exudes that exact same energy. Of course, especially nowadays, there is a large following of Ildjarn’s religion, but I haven’t heard that specific early Hate and Ichneutic sound from other bands since. Heavily distorted, lo-fi and everything reduced to the simplest basic principles of Black Metal/Punk/Garage. I love it!
