On the very last day of 2025, this new Finnish occult sounding Black Metal band self-released this demo in digital form. For certain reasons, I held off on writing a review of ‘Last Rites Of The Dying Sun’ for a while, but it’s too good a demo to leave unreviewed forever. If you’re fond of keyboard-laden occult Black Metal, you should prick up your ears.
Although it certainly doesn’t mimic the bands operating in the same musical territory, Mephistophelian Altar will certainly appeal to fans of those same bands. Many bands that have built their identity on the musical legacy of acts like Necromantia, Varathron, Mystifier, Samael, Mortuary Drape, and Barathrum rely heavily on a mystical atmosphere supported by keyboards and an overall slow tempo. That is much less the case with these Finns. There are keyboards, and there are also more drawn-out passages, but overall, Mephistophelian Altar’s music is much more dynamic.
The main reason for this is that, in addition to the aforementioned influence of warm-blooded and mystical Black Metal, half of the band’s identity consists of an undiluted dose of Bestial Black/Death Metal in the style of early Beherit and Blasphemy. The result is quite unique, with the listener being tossed back and forth between two worlds. From tracks that could have come straight out of the early Greek Black Metal scene to viciously aggressive outbursts where all sense of self-control seems to have vanished. And the crazy thing is: it all blends together seamlessly and never sounds unnatural or contrived.
For those looking for something a little different, this is definitely a must-listen, but it’s also highly recommended for fans of bands like Forbidden Temple, Moenen Of Xezbeth, Moonfall, Funerealm Moon, Cursed Excruciation, Black Edifice, and Haan Valar. If I’m not mistaken, the physical version of this debut demo will be released by the Polish label Unpure Records in a limited run of just 33 copies: you’ve been warned.
