Oblivion – Sheol [Demo]

As more or less my standard procedure when stumbling upon a label that I had never heard before: checking what else is or was going on. A couple of days ago I ran into Fehexenheit Prod., a rather small and obscure label from Chile, they released the first demo by Zweihander, and one thing led to another. That is how I ended up listening to ‘Sheol’, the debut demo tape by Oblivion, also from Chile. It already saw the dark of night during August last year, but I was captivated by the ruggedness of the raw and lo-fi Black Metal of this trio.

Let’s first state that ‘Sheol’ is a demo that is perhaps best kept in the shades and deeper regions of the underground, not because it is bad, on the contrary. This is the stuff that makes the true black gold digger smile, it is proof that you have dug deep enough to find this. Definitely a vital part of the experience when listening to this first demo.

On a musical level, though, ‘Sheol’ might not directly be something truly special, in the sense that you’ve never heard this before. But it is the intensity of the songs and, perhaps more importantly, it is the great atmosphere that does the trick for the most part. It is all rough and muffled, but people who were stuck to the music of bands such as Orgy Of Carrion, Sanguine Relic, Unholy Vampyric Slaughter Sect, Lampir, Carved Cross, Black Cilice and the likes wouldn’t mind some lo-fi tunes, do they? But the thing is, unlike those acts, Oblivion is more based on the traditional sort of Raw Black Metal from the 90s, it is just poured into an extremely harsh production. That means that Oblivion is combining a bit of both worlds and that way harkens back to lots of the Raw Black Metal demos that came out around the late 90s and early 00s. If you have a knack for the bands I just mentioned as well as the rougher Moonblood demos, then you could consider giving this a shot as well. It is not earthshattering, but it definitely brought me in a good mood.
