This second demo tape by Mexican one-man band Mughtasib, which translates to “Violator”, is simply called ‘Invictus’ and continues the path chosen about two years ago when the band debuted with ‘Sacrilege To The Temple Of Scum’. Supreme Fornicator (S.F.), the man behind the band, clearly wasn’t done yet with either the skull-splitting kind of Black/Death Metal or his anti-Abrahamic religious message.
Although ‘Invictus’ is a logical continuation from the first demo tape, it is clear that S.F. has taken things a little more serious this time around. At least, when it comes to the overall sound of this recording. ‘Sacrilege To The Temple Of Scum’, as a whole, sounded rather sharp and therefore leaned more on the Black Metal pillar of the Bestial Black/Death amalgam, this time S.F. has pulled out all the stops to make a real statement.
Not only does it sound much heavier, gone are the shrill bottomless guitars, the overall production is way more in your face. With a heavy grinding guitar tone and a strong emphasis to the low-end of the sonic spectrum, Mughtasib sounds more like a head-on collision between Archgoat, Naked Whipper and Revenge. The first two, naturally, are responsible for the full, crushing sound, but Revenge is certainly an integral part of the mix as well. The Canadian sonic assault can be heard in the all-encompassing, piercing sound that remains a key element of Mughtasib’s repertoire.
Now that Mughtasib’s ultimate musical direction has become a little clearer, it’s safe to say that the most accurate comparison is probably with the Swedish band Vider. And that is, of course, no insult coming from me.
