Hermetic Subjugator might be a new band, but the duo behind it are by no means rookies. Both gents have earned their stripes in the Spanish underground scene with such acts as Rotten Cavern, Fera, Infernaculum, Osmazome, Siegehammer, Blight Psalm and a handful more. With ‘Transmutational Ethos’ the two deliver their firstborn, a 20+ minute demo tape through Profaner Records that demands something from the listener, even from seasoned Extreme Metal fans.
The music itself is not that easy to classify because of its rather multi-facetted nature. Profaner Records filed it under “Blacknoise”, which might not entirely wrong, but it certainly doesn’t cover the whole soundscape of Hermetic Subjugator. It is noisy, that is for sure. It is just as noisy as it is Black Metal, but due to the largely improvised character of the music and the very bleak overall sound, there’s a certain scent of Funeral Doom and experimentalism as well.
If I had to mention a specific comparison, I’d say it feels as a deranged mix of Abrumptum, Burial Chamber Trio and the more experimental acts from Les Légions Noires. Those who have been digging deep enough to the world of Extreme Music already know that this isn’t just a walk in the park or, for that matter, run-of-the-mill, off-the-shelf Black Metal. If you feel you’re up for the task, one last advice: this is preferably enjoyed headache-free and not as background noise.
