Honestly, I missed the band’s digital 1-track single from 2023, but even without knowing much about Casket Dweller, you know you are in for a treat if Nuclear Winter Records is involved. For many years this Greek label has been synonymous for quality Death Metal. I’ve talked about it many times before, but it is a rare thing that a label has kept such a high standard for quality within the confines of Death Metal. Obviously, not everything is equally good, but Casket Dweller, also from Greece, is definitely to be ranked amongst the best releases of the label. If you have a knack for Death Metal deeply rooted in the old school aesthetics and whiff of the Swedish sound, please read along…
Nuclear Winter Records doesn’t only stand for solid Death Metal in general, it also focusses mostly on the darker sides of the genre, sometimes even drawing heavily on the Death/Doom Metal tradition. That is, remarkably, much less the case with Casket Dweller. Even halfway in the first track of ‘River Of Slumber’ it is clear: Casket Dweller is largely based on the musical legacy of Pestilence, Dismember, Fleshcrawl and Morgoth.
But that’s only half the story. For whilst the influence of Martin van Drunen and Marc Grewe is certainly audible in the vocals, the music itself certainly doesn’t sound dated. This is not only down to the solid and heavy production, but also because the tempo is fairly high and lacks the sluggishness of, say, Asphyx; rather, it presents the seasoned headbanger with the impossible challenge of sitting still. The combination of the brisk tempo and the intense vocals gives the whole thing a rather aggressive edge, which, together with the buzzing, almost HM2-like riffs, creates a good balance and an almost fresh sound. In any case, it provides an excellent counterpoint to the generally rather lacklustre current crop of Death Metal bands who have drawn inspiration from classic Swedish Death Metal. What we’re presented with here clearly relies not on the groove, but on the tempo and the catchy riffs. Casket Dweller’s repertoire certainly isn’t lacking in excellent lead guitar work either; just have a listen to ‘Burnt At The Stake’, for example, which features an impressive piece of guitar playing.
Although it certainly brings a refreshing change within the current musical landscape, Casket Dweller doesn’t sound original as a whole. But that is precisely what makes ‘River Of Slumber’ such a brilliant album; this is Death Metal without pretension, yet played with love and dedication. That’s exactly how I like my Death Metal: full of passion.
