As of late it seems that there is an increasing amount of bands that do seem to worship the sound of the old Black/Death/Grind-sound that was originally brought to us by the likes of Beherit and Blasphemy in the early 90’s. Of course, this chaotic style has been played and hailed ever since, but there certainly has been clear ups and downs in its popularity. While we had the pleasure of bands like Sadomator and Proclamation to feast upon during the 00’s, the 10’s were basically free of any real highlights for those craving for the most utterly brutal and savage noise possible, but, as of late…
I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a revival or recrudescence, but I am certainly enjoying myself with an increasing amount of great bands and demos in recent months. To this new movement we can definitely also count the great Canadian Gotthammer: another force to be reckoned with. Uncompromising brutality in the form of unrelenting pummelling, heavy grinding guitars and reverbed vocals, all those basic ingredients are there and they are clearly not there to take prisoners. In its 16 minutes ‘Godslaying Sonic Barbarism’ completely lives up to its name, it sounds blasphemous, aggressive and beautifully violent.
In the scarce moments the band slows down a little, the riffs do get a bit of chance to shine through and a slightly doomy feel sets in, but you will never get much time to fully recover as it again will grab you by the throat before you know it. Nothing original, nothing new, but it is clear that this three-piece didn’t come here to show you any of their new tricks. This is total worship of the old sound, just made for you to choke on.
