Label: Murder Records
Formats: Split Tape

Honestly, I am never keeping a very close eye on Murder Records. There’s no particular reason, it’s just that this label’s releases aren’t usually my cup of tar. But, obviously, when a label is as active and prolific as this one, there’s always something that tickles your fancy. This time it is this short split tape that features two new bands, for both of whom this cassette tape is the first release. The combination of band names and the rather basic artwork already is a clear hint of what you’re about to encounter…

First up is Blasfemator, a Greek band that is not exactly new as it more or less arose from the ashes of Goatslaught and shared a 4-way split/compilation CD with such bands as Necrohammer and Bestial Possession. Although this is a bit of a different band and it only has one former Goatslaught member, the musical offerings are not entirely different. It is pretty much a Black/Death/Thrash Metal amalgam that pays homage to the South-American tradition of playing Extreme Metal: slightly chaotic with total disrespect for musical finesse or the meticulously organized metal nomenclature of today. There’s obvious bits and pieces of old Sarcófago and Sepultura as well some Mutilator, Vulcano and Sextrash. Barking vocals and a ramshackle production make these two first tracks a very enjoyable introduction to Blasfemator.

The other tracks, three in total, are Sepulcral’s. Not quite an original band name, but quite fitting to rather unoriginal Black/Thrash Metal from Colombia. Unoriginal, yes, but in a very good way. I already dropped the “ramshackle” term, but that certainly very much applies to Sepulcral too. It is something that you just need to love, the raw production and the energetic recording: it is so charming. Blasfemator and Sepulcral are a great fit on a musical level, so props to the matchmaker here. If you drop the old Sepultura and Sarcófago from the recipe, keep Vulcano, Mutilator and Sextrash and add a good portion of youthful energy you’ll have a pretty good picture of what this four-headed beast put to tape.
