Bode Maldito – Sodomizing Christ [Demo]

Artist: Bode Maldito
Country: Brazil
Label: Unpure Records
Format: Demo tape
Year: 2024

Although ‘Sodomizing Christ’ was already released digitally by the band itself around the summer of last year, it took a few more months before a physical version surfaced. On the very last day of 2024 Unpure Records, Poland’s heavyweight champion, presented this demo on their “DIY Ungodly Underground Series”. Consequently, this is limited to only 33 copies, but… it’s a good start for this one-man band from Brazil.

‘Sodomizing Christ’ offers a rather gnarly piece of Black/Death Metal, yet, opposed to most of their peers, this is not a down tuned heavy wall of sound. Instead it sounds pretty digital and lacks the depth of a band like, say, Black Witchery, of which it does share some musical common ground with. That means that ‘Sodomizing Christ’ takes some time to get used to, but once you’re settled with this rather typical sound it unfolds as a rather charming demo. Not very good, on a musical level, but it ticks all the right boxes for those who are into real underground demo tapes – in the end, those Unpure Records Underground Series serves its purpose. If you still cherish your 90’s Black Metal demos, this is probably something that you would like to hear and can appreciate, including some really crunchy Hellhammer-like riffs. Just imagine Black Witchery in a very much Sarcófago’s ‘I.N.R.I.’ production (but without the real punch of that classic), and you have quite a clear picture of what Bode Maldito has to offer on this very first demo tape. A Sarcófago cover (‘Nightmare’) seals the deal indefinitely. It might not be the best demo you’ll hear this year, but definitely worth the support.
