Whether Sanglant is also involved with other bands or projects, I do not know, but either way, ‘En Rase Campagne’ is the debut demo tape of Crévüre. As one might expect, judging by the artwork that adorns this first release, this project falls firmly within the realm of Raw Black Metal. But that is by no means the whole story…
It could perhaps be said that the deeper foundations of Crévüre lie in the visionary work of Xasthur and Leviathan, but this French one-man project brings it fully into the present day. The firm repetitive and hallucinating character harks back to the early stages of what today is called Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. But with a stronger sense of organic atmosphere, Crévüre brings more to the table and by no means seems to want to rehash the same ideas of others. Even a bit of a slight Pagan ambiance is woven into both tracks, together clocking in well over twenty minutes. It might be a bridge too far to say this is original, but at least ‘En Rase Campagne’ is not a copycat affair and has enough to offer of its own.
But it is actually the overall sound that earns Crévüre a place in the contemporary Black Metal scene. Its muffled and swampy lo-fi production will not scare away fans of the old French school of Raw Black Metal or the modern-day hotbeds like Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina or the USA, but it certainly pays off to listen to ‘En Rase Campagne’ a couple of times to let it slowly reveal all of its intricacies. There’s definitely more than meets the ear, at least at first blush. Its not that this is a multifaceted or is using a plethora of layers, its more that the music starts to sink in better with each listen. Not only do you get used to the sound, but the finer details, such as the melodies and even the well-hidden leads, become increasingly clear.
Judging from what Sanglant is presenting us with on this first ever demo tape with Crévüre, to me it’s highly unlikely these are really his first steps in writing and recording Black Metal, or music in general. But in the end it is not all that important anyway, it is the music that counts and with ‘En Rase Campagne’ still fresh in my mind, I can only say that this is an great start to the project. Anyone interested can pick up one of the thirty copies of this demo cassette tape for a small fee via the Bandcamp page.
