Deviated Instinct – Welcome To The Orgy [Compilation]

Artist: Deviated Instinct
Country: United Kingdom
Label: Peaceville Records
Formats: CD
Year: 2006

Peaceville Records started out as label for punk, crust and hardcore and had cult bands like Doom, Axegrinder, Prophecy Of Doom, Electro Hippies and this Deviated Instinct for instance. It was only years later that they started getting interested in metal and became known for their ‘Peaceville Three’ which were Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema. For a change Peaceville Records is starting to re-release albums that actually need a revamped release instead of the 666th re-release of “Like Gods Of The Sun” or any Darkthrone album.

This very nice looking digipack contains some of Deviated Instinct’s older recordings. To be precise it contains the “Welcome To The Orgy” 7” EP (which was the first ever release of Peaceville Records) and both “Rock ‘N’ Roll Conformity”- and “Guttural Breath”-albums. So in fact it misses both demo tapes, the “Nailed” 12” and both “Definitive Instinct”- and “Re-Opening Old Wounds”-albums. Which clearly states the weaker spot of this release, it shouldn’t be too dificult to get the rights of the other works (“Definitive Instinct” was even on Peacevill Records too!) and add it to this document and make it a full-on discography on a double-disc. But, for some, to me, unknown reason we have to deal with the first three Peaceville-recordings only. Which still leaves much for your enjoyment, don’t get me wrong, yet a total overview of this influential bands’ career would’ve been much more worthwhile.

First of is the “Welcome To The Orgy” 7” EP (1987) which has got a rather hollow and pushed-backwards sound that certainly fits in the scene of that time. With a clear influence of Hellhammer and early British punk (think of Stiff Little Fingers for instance) it shows Deviated Instinct as a band in its initial years growing up to the influential band they would become (mainly after they disbanded in 1993). The songs are rather slow over all and have this nice buzzing bassguitar that marks its primitive 80’s origin. The first album was released a year later in 1988 and displays a huge progression on almost all fronts, first of all the sound is much more clear and hasn’t got that extremely buzzing bassguitar and a more upfront drumsound. The music has been speeded up as well so it fits more in the trendsetting fast hardcore movement that started to burst from the British islands alongside bands like Extreme Noise Terror, Electro Hippies, Doom and Ripcord. Another year later they released their “Guttural Breath”-LP (1989) which couldn’t have a better name as it again showed a huge difference from its predecessor in all possible ways. It has a far darker sound and has much in common with the sound Carcass would display on their “Heartwork”-album four years later (keep in mind that Carcass put out “Symphonies Of Sickness” in 1989!) mixed up with a bit of that old Black Sabbath/Hellhammer vibe and a bit of that hard-to-describe 80’s underground metal sound. The vocals are a bit of what Jeff Walker did on the aforementioned Carcass album “Heartwork” which means rather guttural and gruff kind of talking, maybe that was the reason to christen this album “Guttural Breath”.

All in all I’m very glad that this long out of print material made available again but I keep finding it a missed chance to offer a full-discography for generations to come. It is very important (and fun by the way!) to trace back all kinds of influences from bands active today to understand where music comes from that you happen to enjoy today. Therefore, this “Welcome To The Orgy” CD is a nice historical document nevertheless. The appreciation given to this release is therefore solely for the musical content and the nice digipack presentation, obviously.
