If I were to start a band (which I’m not going to do, so don’t worry), I’d probably enjoy coming up with song titles and things like that the most. Playing with words and finding something that fits the intended concept is an interesting and creative process. A band name like Execution wouldn’t occur to me, if only because Metal-Archives managed to identify more than twenty bands with this band name, so it’s not exactly original. On the other hand, Execution does fit the raging Death/Thrash Metal of this young Swedish band, which, incidentally, sounds just as unoriginal as its band name.
Perhaps all of this has something to do with the band’s youthfulness; after all, at least some of the band members haven’t yet reached adulthood, but it certainly accounts for a large part of Execution’s charm. A touch of innocence and youthful enthusiasm that is often lost as musicians grow older and broaden their horizons, but which makes a lot of music enjoyable for that reason alone.
So, Execution. ‘Scorched Remains’ is their debut and is a seventeen-minute demo tape featuring six tracks, including an intro, and is sure to put a smile on the face of anyone who prefers their Death Metal the way it sounded around 1987 and 1988. Maybe it’s not 100% perfect yet, and it doesn’t have to be, especially not for a debut demo tape, but a lot is made up for by the palpable energy these four musicians have poured into it. If you still enjoy listening to ‘Strappado’ or ‘Seven Churches’ or Pestilence’s earliest work, then this is definitely a demo you should check out. With a healthy dose of Thrash Metal woven into this tasty proto-Death Metal, it’s sure to take you back in time, and the excellent guitar work, including tasty leads, adds to the experience. Even a stray Black Sabbath-esque influence and a Napalm Death riff (during the ‘Scum’ days) might suggest that the musicians in question have a broad musical background. Or, even if that isn’t really intentional, they’ve at least managed to capture the spirit of the rise of Extreme Metal in the late 1980s.
In addition to the aforementioned Possessed, Slaughter, and Pestilence, this should also appeal to fans of bands like Dark Angel, Necrovore, Massacra, Merciless, Agressor, Incubus, Protector, and Devastation (Texas). The only thing missing right now is that this demo is only available digitally; it goes without saying that this material would be perfect for a cassette tape release.
