With an album and the re-release of an earlier EP, Funeral Vomit has already proven itself to be by far the most interesting band on the Spanish Xtreem Music label. While the majority of the label’s roster consists of downright boring and/or repetitive bands, Funeral Vomit is truly something special, a little nugget of gold. In fact, they are almost as repetitive, but at least they still exude passion and energy. This diamond in the rough treats us to another half hour of unpolished Death Metal.
Death Metal with one foot in the raw South American roots and the other in the more Bestial Death Metal tradition. As was already evident on the ‘Funeral Vomit’ EP and the debut LP ‘Monumental Putrescence’, Funeral Vomit manages to fuse these two worlds with apparent ease into something that sounds wonderfully authentic. The only difference is that singer O. Vomit, with his ultra-deep grunts, seems to draw his vocal inspiration mainly from bands such as Incantation, Disma and especially Undergang.
Funeral Vomit’s music is not particularly exalting in the sense that it seems to pursue any kind of progressiveness, but the band’s strength lies mainly in the fact that, despite the fairly limited musical framework in which they operate, they always manage to come up with a bunch of rock-solid riffs. And not only that, it is mainly the dynamics in the tempos that ensure that a Funeral Vomit album, unlike many of its peers, does not become tedious after just a few songs. It’s not just groove, and it’s not all served up to us at the same tempo, but there is some genuine music-making going on, with a delicious touch of rawness, reminiscent of both the Latin American tradition and that of bands such as Order From Chaos, Bestial Warlust or Angelcorpse, which helps to prevent it all from becoming monotonous.
But make no mistake, ‘Upheaval Of Necromancy’ may have a few sharp thorns, but the album sounds exceptionally good and gives the whole thing a powerful character. Perhaps the vocals are a little too prominent in the mix, but that shouldn’t spoil the fun: this second album by the Colombians certainly lives up to my expectations.
