Sometimes things don’t need to be perfect to strike a certain charm Or maybe it’s even that imperfect things tend to me more charming. In all sorts of music there are obvious examples that imperfection or simplicity can work superbly, bands like Ramones or Nirvana are textbook examples of how non-complex songs can turn into evergreens. Also in metal bands like Anvil, Hellhammer or Nunslaughter are solid examples of bands that are not necessarily found in the same corner as Gorguts or Yngwie Malmsteen when it comes to musical ingenuity. Although I wouldn’t mention Hydin from Rome, Italy in the same breath as any of the above, they too are an example of rather imperfect but charming Heavy Metal.

With ‘First Slash’ this foursome and session drummer Adriano Luzzi presents us a 2-track demo that feels like a bit of a mishmash of different styles and influences. Although the basis of Hydin can be found in 80’s Heavy Metal with clear origins in that of American and German making at the beginning of the 80’s, the band also incorporates bits and pieces of classic Hardrock, Speed Metal and the occasional Thrash Metal riff. The compositions make clear that especially lead guitarist Seth is a talented musician who dishes out some interesting leads and solos. But in terms of song writing, there is still much ground to be gained. The somewhat clunky transitions and angular riffs sometimes make for a bit of unnatural flows in the two songs. Vocalist Lord Vexus doesn’t really help matters either, he obviously is the weakest link in the whole chain that keeps Hydin together.

Yet, with a slight punky attitude and a palpable enjoyment in playing these songs these Italian Heavy Metallers still pull off a decent first demo. Imperfection again proves no cause for objection, in fact it even adds to the charm of ‘First Slash’. However, Hydin would do well to take a little more care with cohesion and more fluid songwriting on the next recording. For now: if you’re interested in listening to a band that keeps middle ground between Anvil, InnerWish, Rage and Grave Digger should give ‘Fist Slash’ a shot, it only takes 12 minutes of your life anyway, nothing to lose, right?
