Invoketh is a new entity arising from the Extreme Metal scene from France. A new band maybe, but the three members are far from rookies. On the contrary even, with other activities in bands such as Profanation, Deströyer 666, Destruction Ritual, Necroblood, Sépulcre, Venefixion, Necrowretch, Hexekration Rites they are very well-versed in the intricacies of the trade. And that, ladies and gentlemen, pays off on this first offering that is midway between both Black- and Death Metal – the old and necro way, obviously.
In fact, the five tracks of ‘Sabbatikal Obsession’ is pretty much a cumulation of everything these guys have been doing the past years (or decades even). It really feels like they have put everything from Necroblood, Necrowretch, Sépulcre, Venefixion, Trench Hell etc. in a blender and serve it loud. The old-school artwork and layout, in combination with the spikes-‘n’-chains photo of the band might have already given away what to expect, but it is fair to say that Invoketh lives up to the expectations.
In just over fifteen minutes we are truly being treated on some unadulterated, punishing Death Metal that echoes the sound of yore. The early days of the Death Metal scene, when everything was just “Extreme Metal”, with lots of Black Metal and Thrash Metal incorporated in the overall sound. That means that this indeed fits well to the Possessed, Sadistic Intent, Necrovore, Imprecation, Infester etc. sort of evil-as-phuck Death Metal. Completely non-trendy evil stuff that is as far removed as possible from the caverncore trendies that still seem to infest the current international Death Metal scene.
These five tracks of real Death Metal are available on a demo tape released by Messe Noire Productions and Obscurity Of Error Records. Its limitation is unknown to me, but I wouldn’t sleep on it if you have a knack for evil American-style Death Metal with a good dose of that savage Latin American wildness poured all over it.
