After three demos, or EPs as they are often called these days, the unholy duo known as Liturgy Of Desecration are now back with a proper full-length. The album, ‘Eschatological Conflagration’, also marks their tenth anniversary, which in itself suggests that the band has taken its time releasing its material, something that is in itself worthy of praise these days. The musical content, however, has never suffered from the somewhat slow pace of work, so once again you can look forward to a dose of rough-and-ready Black/Death Metal.
The debut EP, ‘And The Goat Of Sodomy Commands…’, released via the Canadian label Vonfrost Records, was never widely available here in Europe; I personally missed out on it, but the two subsequent EPs left a decent impression. Even now that I’ve listened to them again just for the sake of it, the two have been an great calling card for the band. Liturgy Of Desecration may not be a top-tier act in the genre, but they’re certainly good enough to warrant a moment’s consideration and your attention. The same goes for this full-length album, which runs for just over half an hour: it may not be a real standout, but it certainly deserves a passing mark and offers excellent entertainment value.
Like their previous work, ‘Eschatological Conflagration’ is characterised by a raw sound and an overall musically chaotic nature. The latter is particularly striking when you consider that the guitarist and singer in question also flexes his muscles in the atmospheric and dreamy Mournful Moon. Liturgy Of Desecration may well be his outlet, for here he reveals his most barbaric side. The music is characterised by a catching imbalance in the mix, with the vocals and the grinding guitars taking centre stage. The drums are largely buried, and the bass, also played by the drummer, is barely audible. This messy affair does, however, give the band its charm, and it is an amusing observation that this album actually leans even more heavily on that chaotic foundation than the previous two recordings. The same can be said of the sound, which is perhaps even rougher than before and adds to the feeling that this is a live recording from the rehearsal room; there’s no shortage of authenticity. So devotees of the genre know exactly what to do…
