Lore Liege – Remembrance

Artist: Lore Liege
Country: USA
Label: Self-Released
Formats: Digital
Year: 2024

Over the roughly five years that Lore Liege, a one-man Black Metal band from the US, has been around, it has already produced quite a discography. Of that, I personally especially liked the 2022-released ‘Dreams Of A Forgotten Curse’-EP. The band’s penchant for Burzum was already hard to deny, but on this EP the lone musician behind the band got really close to the Norwegian master of melancholic Black Metal.

‘Remembrance’ is the follow-up full-length to that nice little EP, but while the same Burzumish vibe is felt throughout most of the songs, it is by far not as convincing. The music on this album has been recorded during various sessions in the winter of 2022/2023 and in 2024. While that shouldn’t be much of a problem to begin with, it feels like this might have caused the lack of coherence this album suffers from.

There’s a good amount of great riffs and on occasion the same mournful atmosphere of the previous few recordings do pop up, but as a whole, the album doesn’t really seem to get wings. It feels as if it runs stationary with only a few highlights which gives you hope that the album takes off finally. But to no avail. It seems as if opposite to every moment where strong song writing builds tension is another one that breaks it down again.

Still, just labelling this album as a bad effort is a bit too harsh of a judgement. Mostly because of the solid riffs and some of the great and haunting passages that makes this album still an interesting listen. Its just that I can’t really shake off the feeling that it would be better off as an EP where the less successful bits have been pruned out. But, if you’re crying out for some Burzum-inspired riffs, ‘Remembrance’ is right up your alley. Both classic Burzum and later albums (‘Belus’ and ‘Fallen’) pass by, so there’s something for everyone.
