When it comes to occult sounding, ancient Black Metal, in recent years most attention is directed at the Belgian scene. Not without reason, as bands like Forbidden Temple and Moenen Of Xezbeth really put not only the country but also this niche genre in its entirety back on the map with their astonishing take on the formula laid out by bands like Varathron, Necromantia, Mystifier, Goatlord, Xantotol, Barathrum, Mortuary Drape and Samael. However, one could almost forget that a nearly equivalent scene is flourishing in Spain: just as small and consisting almost entirely of the same people in new combinations, but driven primarily by mesmerizing, incantatory, occult Black Metal. One of the best bands from this Spanish circle is Nigromancer, who released their second demo earlier this year.
The band formed in 2018 and released their first demo the following year, titled “Pérdida Y Denigración De La Fe Antes De La Caída Al Infierno (Por Siempre Jamás)”—a name that’s particularly difficult for non-Spanish speakers to remember and pronounce. It was released by Crimson Tide Productions, a label also run by one of the members of that clique of like-minded individuals. That same label has now also released this new demo, with the even more tongue-twisting title ‘La Noche Del Sacramento Negro Bajo La Luna De Sangre, Invocando A La Maldición Hasta El Fin De Los Días De Las Hordas De Dios’.
There’s quite a bit of time between these two demo tapes. Over six years is a long time, though it was briefly interrupted by the release of a split 7″ EP with the Finnish band Darkera, one of the many bands of Goatprayer and Black Moon (also of Witchcraft, Moonfall, Necromonarchia Daemonum, Funerealm Gloom, and Death Amen), but some things apparently need time to sprout at the right moment and reach their idiosyncratic and gloomy bloom.
Clearly, no time was spent refining the sound or devising a sophisticated concept. Nigromancer relies on an energy and atmosphere that sound both spontaneous and almost improvised. That feeling is reinforced by the short length of the songs; just like on the previous two releases, the track length rarely exceeds two minutes. The raw, messy sound also plays a part; it’s encouraging to see that there are bands who understand that the effectiveness of music often lies in the rough, rehearsal-like production rather than in polishing and highlighting the riffs and, above all, the drums.
This is the kind of Black Metal that has drifted far enough away from the First Wave and hasn’t yet been tainted by the later Second Wave. This demo tape by the Spanish band ranks among the better recordings of the current generation of bands inspired by underground Black Metal from around 1990. So, if you have a soft spot for those aforementioned Belgian bands or such acts as Ophidian, Caedes Cruenta, Haan Valar, Black Edifice, Oath Of Malignancy, Necromantical Invocation, Cult Of Eibon, Under The Moon, Moonfall, Funerealm Gloom etc. you should really keep an eye out for Nigromance as well.
