At face value there’s plenty of similarities between the Black Metal bands Onheilsprofeet and Bløtskål. Not only were both bands founded in 2026, they also simultaneously released their debut EP on Cassette on Wolfkult Religion. In addition, they hail from the Northern parts of the Netherlands, and feature Swerc, who assumes the role of drummer in Onheilsprofeet. But the resemblance also has to end somewhere. Rather than a union with The Scepter like in Bløtskål, in Onheilsprofeet Swerc teams up with Maculist, Wiederschim and vocalist Lafawijn, who together have contributed to acts like Salacious Gods, Gheestenland, Orewoet and Winter of Sin. And stylistically, both delve from different pools of Scandinavian Black Metal.
While Bløtskål opted for a piercing cold style that blended its Black Metal with hints of Folk, Onheilsprofeet instead is more focused on Black Metal with a clear sense of thumping groove. I think the best way to describe it is as early Gorgoroth blended with Horna and similar Finnish bands, finished off with a distant dash of Punk. Think of dynamically shifting riffs, threatening strumming and plenty of rocking passages topped up with rhythmic grooving drums and a nice raspy throat. The sort of music that invites for a good ugh from time to time, something Lafawijn certainly didn’t let pass by either. Listening to this EP, it becomes evident that the intent of ‘Slotakkoord Van De Dood’ is not to deliver anything groundbreaking. This is nothing more than a catchy Black Metal EP in the Nordic style, played by a bunch of guys that life and breathe the genre. And to be honest, I wish we had more of these solid and well-executed releases, just pure entertainment that you can play in whatever mood you are. For certain a commendable debut by the band!
