Opositor / Warslaughter – Putrefactio Et Apotheosis [Split]

Artist: Opositor / Warslaughter
Country: Spain
Label: Profaner Records
Formats: Split Cassette / Split CD
Year: 2025

Although originally intended as a split 7” EP, this split between two contemporary Spanish descendants of the greats from their homeland has now been released on cassette tape and CD via Profaner Records, run by one of the guys from Warslaughter. Both bands have built up a respectable discography distributed through various smaller labels, so it comes as no surprise that these two Spanish Black/Death Metal bands eventually came together for a split release.

‘Putrefactio Et Apotheosis’ offers two tracks, one of each band with Opositor opening the dance. Yet, it might be clear you are not being treated to a flamenco or bolero. Instead, we hear Opositor at their most Death Metal. Although there is still a clear echo of the barbaric Black/Death Metal roots reminiscent of Blasphemy, particularly the Canadians’ “Gods Of War” album, the emphasis seems to be mainly on the Death Metal side. Because the wild intention is still there, this song by the Spaniards actually resembles a slightly more Death Metal-oriented Angelcorpse. A solid performance with a heavy production, but personally I miss the dirty touch of the previous releases a little bit. This shift was already somewhat audible on last year’s self-titled EP, but that path has clearly been continued.

Warslaughter, on the other hand, still has that muffled sound that I appreciated from their earlier efforts. Yet, they too offer a somewhat more Death Metal oriented track, also pretty much in the rolling and axe wielding fashion of early Angelcorpse. But, it is that murkier production that makes Warslaughter’s track much more convincing. The rather typical dynamics in the track also add to that same feeling. Still, compared to some of the band’s earlier material, this is not really their best offering. But, as a wise man once said, you can’t always roll sixes.
