Primordial Gate is a new solo-project by Yöpyöveli, who has gained a bit of traction in the underground Black Metal scene with his other project Bronze Hall, but is also active in Houre and Forgotten Vale. It is therefore a safe assumption that this Finnish multi-instrumentalist is gifted with an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Although Primordial Gate and Bronze Hall do bear some similarities, Primordial Gate is still a different beast to tame.

Bronze Hall is an overall more melodic and darker piece of Black Metal than the much sharper sounding Primordial Gate, however, both bands have a similar kind of triumphant and heathen atmosphere that ties them to the same musical spirit father. That also means that Primordial Gate is more traditional in nature, harking back to the very fundamentals of the Second Wave Of Black Metal with riffs that might remind of early Darkthrone, Gorgoroth and Dødheimsgard. But a direct comparison with those giants of the early Norwegian Black Metal scene is a rather oversimplified view of the whole thing. Mostly because Primordial Gate throws in a more organic and natural flow of folkish melodies and harmonies, resulting in something that sounds more modern and befitting the current generation of Black Metal bands that tend to lean to a more well-rounded take on the genre. It also doesn’t really come across as typical Finnish, although there is a familiarity to those folky melodies and that glorious atmosphere. Listen to the closing ‘Hyperboreal Trance’ for instance, a song that is quite typical for the whole of the demo but seems to cumulate all the individual musical elements into a grand ending that reminds of early Falkenbach or classic Bathory.

It is the balance between a profound raw but still clean production that propels the catchy melodies and the overall triumphant atmosphere to something that feels both authentic and fresh at the same time. Primordial Gate certainly isn’t breaking new ground here or trying to reinvent anything, but their focus on good songs and powerful songwriting is more than enough to make ‘Silence Of The Slumbering Landscape’ a particularly strong debut demo and introduction to the band.
