Sakrifixion may well be a new band, but the musicians involved have been active in the German underground scene for decades. Their track records boast names such as Abythic, Lunar Chalice, Mysteria Mystica Aeterna, Nightwalker, Erazor, Hagatiz, Ulfsdalir, Pestnebel, Nigrum Tenebris and literally dozens of others from the Kassel (Germany) Black/Death Metal scene. It is therefore hardly surprising that Sakrifixion’s debut release is certainly not just a ‘quick and dirty’ experiment. Admittedly, the ‘cover art’ does look a bit amateurish with the MS Paint logo so prominently displayed in the centre, but the music is definitely more than professional…

It is, of course, common knowledge that Death Metal as a genre has evolved into a multi-layered and transformative entity which, in many cases, bears little resemblance to the almost childlike simplicity of, say, Massacre. For decades, it has been a genre capable of being almost as exciting, creative and innovative as black metal, but it is an objectively verifiable fact that, within the confines of death metal, one has to go to greater lengths to find bands that meet those criteria. Quite early on, bands such as Morbid Angel and Immolation demonstrated that it is possible to experiment with ingenious compositions and a claustrophobic atmosphere without compromising the brutality, the very essence, of the genre. Although all three are particularly ineffective in terms of producing new material, this movement is currently led by bands such as Dead Congregation, Grave Miasma and Cruciamentum.

You could call them inspired bands, or, if your approach is more negative: copycats, but with the success of those bands, it is only natural that others will be drawn to that specific dark Death Metal sound. It’s obvious, too, that this happens with varying degrees of success. But in the case of Sakrifixion, we can certainly say they are a high-quality addition to the circle of bands following this dark path. At least, based on this 3-track demo.

‘Promo 2026’ builds on the foundations laid by Dead Congregation in the mid-2000s, which were given added depth by Grave Miasma in the years that followed. Ingenious Death Metal with an utterly dark atmosphere that at times bears traces of Death/Doom Metal or even Black Metal, yet remains firmly rooted in the Death Metal tradition of Morbid Angel, Immolation or Acheron. Sakrifixion also uses melancholic keyboards to further emphasise that abyssal atmosphere; although the keyboards are not as prominent as on the early Nocturnus records, it seems quite likely that ‘The Key’ is also one of this band’s favourite Death Metal albums.

Further praise is due to the powerful vocals, which feature quite prominently in the mix and firmly anchor the music within the Death Metal spectrum. Finally, there is the quite impressive production, which allows all the elements of the music to come into their own; it never becomes muddled or chaotic, but keeps the focus firmly on the strong riffs and compositions.

I’ve been told that a cassette tape version of this ‘Promo 2026’ is due to be released; let me give you a piece of advice: make sure you don’t miss this, as it is without a doubt one of the best Death Metal demos of recent years.
