From the German virtuous society of punks-gone-metal, this new band arises. Satanic Black Blood are a duo that’s also active in bands such as Secret Tongues, Morbid Rituals and Prehistoric Warcult, but this time they go a bit deeper in Black Metal’s macabre past. This aptly titled demo tape is a clear homage to American Black Metal from the early 90’s.
In three tracks Satanic Black Blood simply cranks out some impressively conservative tunes that would definitely appeal to those who are into old Profanatica and early Havohej as well as Goatlord, Von and especially Demoncy. Of course, a clear admiration for the music of Beherit, Witchcraft, Mystifier and early Barathrum also shines through.
Just as with the majority of that now rather typical German-sound of regressive Black Metal played by punks, the sound quality is the only thing that really sets them apart from the originators. The real crude and harsh sound of those earliest recordings of Profanatica and Demoncy is lacking here, which consequently takes a bit away from the authenticity. Lots of this genre’s charm lies within these very rough edges and frayed details. Yet, when using comparisons to Havohej, Von and Witchcraft you do not exactly have to expect anything pro-tool produced either. A separate and honourable mention goes to the great whispering vocals very much reminiscent to Beherit and Sperm Of Antichrist/Void Meditation Cult, these are pretty much the icing on the cake.
As a whole, Satanic Black Blood certainly delivers what they were set out to do in the first place. The rather warm buzzing sound embedded in an overall rather chaotic mould are a true treat to the ears of anyone who cherishes these long bygone years.
