First of all, this is not exactly a brand new demo (or EP), it was originally released by the band in digital form in December of 2024, after which the cassette tape edition quickly followed, issued by Nihilistic Mortality Productions. Yet, despite my eagle eyes, Satanic Gore Procession slipped under my radar. Until recently, when the demo was reissued on CD by Order Of The Old Flame Productions. And what a shame it would’ve been if this fine 5-track demo would remain undiscovered. Oh, and maybe it is good to set this straight first, this is not a Goregrind band nor a Brutal Death Metal band. Expect ancient and occult Black Metal that takes you right back to the turn of the 1990’s.
In just under half an hour, ‘Satanic Gore Procession’ offers you a bumpy ride on nostalgia’s train, straight to a time when Extreme Metal was mostly still called Death Metal or Black Metal, regardless whether it was Megadeth or Napalm Death. Yet, to discover this sort of bands, you had to dig deep and go to the more obscure regions of the tape trading lists. If old Samael, Mystifier, Impurity, Varathron, old Opera IX, Barathrum, old Mortuary Drape and Xantotol can still spark your enthusiasm, this self-titled demo is definitely something you should give a shot.
The tempo is predominantly slow and with a lack of brutal riffing, the overall sound is very “open”, resulting in a very atmosphere-heavy experience. The way the riffs are implemented is very reminiscent of (old) Varathron, but while it doesn’t have the same Hellenic touch and feel, it still has a profound occult and necro sound. The eerie melodies and the interesting drums, especially in the fills, do form the finishing touch of something very special. Although there has been a slight revival in recent years, this is still something quite unique that you only really encounter within very specific labels and distros. For purists of the ancient necro sound, Satanic Gore Procession is another band to embrace and cherish!
