‘Mucilaginous Sewage’ first saw the light of day almost a year ago, but only in the form of a cassette tape. The vinyl version took a while to arrive, but finally surfaced at the end of last year. Since the 7″ EP format appeals to me in a special way, I even prefer it to the cassette tape, which I already love. The music? If you’ve heard Septic Fumes on their debut demo from 2023, or the promo tape for a yet-to-be-released split with Stenched, then you know what to expect.
If this EP is your first introduction to this American duo, then it should suffice to say that you are dealing with a joint release by Extremely Rotten Productions and Headsplit Records. When those two labels put their heads together, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a lot of mudslinging involved. This is the kind of stuff that appeals to fans of both filthy Death Metal and Grindcore. In almost fourteen minutes, four songs race by that strike a balance between Impetigo, Carcass, Dead, and Blood on the one hand, and Pungent Stench and Macabre on the other. A solid and almost seamless fusion of two worlds, not exactly original of course, but executed to near perfection.
As a result, this is the kind of music that appeals to fans of bands that naturally straddle the line between both genres. Simply put: a little bit of Exhumed, a dash of General Surgery, and a pinch of Necrony. It doesn’t have to be that complicated. Simple and effective, tasty and recognizable. Yummy!
