A while ago I reviewed the Thunderbolt album “The Burning Deed Of Deceit”, and I was quite impressed by the power of the grim and evil sound this band could put on CD. Unfortunatley I still haven’t heard the whole album because of some scratches on my promo copy, but should soon be solved. So, a little talk with Paimon of Thunderbolt was in place. A talk about the dark side…
Hail Paimon! How are you!
Hail Satan! I’m ok now, thank you! By the way, thank you for your support and interest!
The first reviews have been written. How were the reactions so far?
Well, I can say that I’m really satisfied with the response on new Thunderbolt album. It looks that many people in the underground appreciated our hard job we did on “The Burning Deed of Deceit”. Some of reviews were just amazing, because some people said that it’s “the best black metal album of the year” etc, etc… I think that people likes this cd because of its true evil, violent and uncompromising spirit and atmosphere.
I was quite impressed with your last album. Could you tell us something about he writing process?
Thank you! I just play what I feel… When I compose, I want to put the most violent, uncompromising and blasphemous feelings into my music. But I always remember about equilibrium between brutal stuff and monumental, atmospheric parts.
I saw in the CD booklet that you are the only member of Thunderbolt. Is this a decision you made or is it quite impossible to find good/dedicated band members?
It WAS very problemous to find any adequate and serious persons to create together with them a strong line-up for Thunderbolt. The biggest problem for me was to find a good drummer. But to play in such band as Thunderbolt it’s not sufficient that you are a good musician, you must to have the correct attitude regarding black metal and its ideology. However, lately I’ve found some serious persons and the present line up of Thunderbolt is: Paimon (guitars, vocals, Molestator (guitars, vocals), D. (bass) and Necrolucas (drums). If it is an ultimate line-up of Thunderbolt – time shall tell.
Well, to be honest I saw the name of “Thunderbolt” some times before, but never heard anything released before this last album. There might be more people like me, who never heard about your band. Could you please tell us how things got started in the past?
It was the year 1993 when I decide to create a band, to do, you know, something own and personal. All of us (other ex-members) were maniacs of fucking Metal since more-or-less the end of 80’s. Thunderbolt was born because of my fascination(s) of Black Metal. I was always something like a “main-mind” behind Thunderbolt, I’ve created Thunderbolt because of my hatred towards christianity and my total fascination of dark side of nature. I found the name “Thunderbolt” because for me it’s the symbol of mighty and eternal power of nature, I just love the storms in infernal summer’s nights… Thunderbolt and storm is something what appals weak humans, I love it’s destructive power. The music of Thunderbolt developed through the years from very raw and primitive Black Metal into more conscios and serious form of Black Art.
Thus far Thunderbolt released following materials: “Beyond Christianity: demo 1996, “Black Clouds Over Dark Majesty” Mlp 1997, “The Sons of The Darkness” Lp 2000 and “The Burning Deed of Deceit” Lp 2002. Just listen to it and you’ll see how big (musical) way Thunderbolt have passed since the beginning. I’ll not speak about all those line-up changes that took place because it’s just worthless…
Is there a special concept you follow with Thunderbolt? Any ideology that lives behind the songs? I think you follow a Satanic concept…
Thunderbolt is pure Satanic black metal band. That is the main principle behind the genre called black metal in my opinion and we follow that way. In my opinion black metal should be Satanic, misanthropic and evil Art. As for Satanism, my Satanism has nothing in common with christian shit, it’s my personal way of development. You can call it as well a self-sufficient individualism. I haven’t any “god” over myself, I just walk the paths that I think are right for me. I unchain the primordial beast that sleeps hidden inside me.
Where does the name of Thunderbolt stand for? I could imagine the immense power of thunder and lightning, or the enormous power of Mother Nature.
Just go two questions back for this one.
What about the Polish scene? Do you participate in it? You follow it? What is your opinion about it anyway?
I think that nowadays the condition of Polish black metal scene is bad. Many jealous bastard who talk shit on your back, spreading fucking rumours, much unhealthy rivalry etc… I must say that nothing could bring back the might of this scene from the beginning of 90’s. When we started in 1993 most of bands (there was only a few true bands enganged into black metal movement at that time) were supporting each other and that was great. I think that there are too many kids nowadays in the scene who think they know much about black metal, but in fact they know nothing about it… They know nothing about the past, its values, its true goals… As for the Polish black metal scene I will mention before all the band called Infernal War. They play total extreme and uncompromising black metal in the vein of Marduk, sometimes it reminds me Angelcorpse etc… Check them or die! Besides, I support Besatt, Selbstmord, Kataxu, Thor’s Hammer, Black Altar and few others. Personally, I see that the true satanic black/death metal scene is now stronger that ever just listen to: Azarath, Anima Damnata, Witchmaster or Throneum. Also, here we have just great ambient band called Sui Generis Umbra (ex-Umbra). If you like this kind of music, you should check them out…
Are you also active in some other bands or projects?
Actually, I’m not.
What is your play list these days?
Well, it’s really hard to tell you because I listen to so many fucking sick and great bands… But, Ok, today it will be:
– Cadaver Inc. “Discipline”
– Carpathian Forest “Defending The Throne of Evil”
– Azarath “Demon Seed”
– Witchmaster “Masochistic Devil Worship” and “Sex, Drugs and Satan” EP
– Anima Damnata / Throneum Split CD
– Angelcorpse “Inexorable”
– Marduk “World Funeral”
– 1349 “Liberation”
– Aborym “With No Human Intervention” and so on…
Did you hear any records you really liked? And which ones you thought were shit?
Heh, well, I’ve listening to many fucking killer bands as well as many shitty stuff… Lately I listen to Cadaver Inc. “Discipline”, 1349 “Liberation”, Carpathian Forest “Defending” and Leviathan “The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide” which are just killer. I will not speak about shit because shit is just worthless…
Thanks for the interview! Do you have any last words to add?
I’d like to thank you for all the support and interest. You know who you are. Await our next opus and support the true black metal bands… Hail the cult of death!
