‘Sic Transit Gloria Mundi’ was the second demo tape (or EP) from the Brazilian Black/Death Metal band Trance Of The Undead, helmed by the person with the same name who is also behind Cursed Excruciation, originally released in early 2020. Now that we are a few years on, Trance Of The Undead must have thought that he progressed enough to realise that the original version of the demo didn’t quite met his ideals. So, with ‘Sic Transit Gloria Mundi MMXXIV’ he presents you how the first song of that 2020 demo/EP would’ve sounded if it were recorded almost five years later.
This 2024-edition of the EP is not just a mere rehashing of the older EP. Whereas the original version contained four tracks, this new one has only the title track and judging from the extreme limitation of it, it’s just released in only 13 copies, it is more of a musical experiment than an a serious new release. But, that doesn’t mean that ‘Sic Transit Gloria Mundi MMXXIV’ is not interesting, on the contrary I daresay. Not at all am I a fan of re-recordings and not even remixing or remastering, but in this particular case I think Trance Of The Undead does more justice to this track. Not only does it feel a bit meatier because of the heavier guitar sound and overall production, but the depth and dynamics of the song feels much more prominent than on the original version. The organ deployed here and there and the different tempos really come out much better now, making ‘Sic Transit Gloria Mundi MMXXIV’ a far more all-round great Atmospheric Black/Death Metal track. Especially the emphasis on the atmosphere, compared to the original, makes this 2024-version much more of a alluring experience, even fitting better to Trance Of The Undead’s other musical endeavours, it also fits better with his grand musical example: Mystifier.
