Lately, it seems like choosing the strangest and most unpronounceable band names has become a way to score points for being obscure. I get that a lot of names have already been used, but this current trend is starting to get a bit annoying. Some bands of this kind will see this as a nod to the most obscure bands from the Les Légions Noires movement that started with this. Chilean band Vhünkhobeltràkh seems to fit perfectly into this trend. However, the Raw Black Metal of this one-man band doesn’t necessarily sound French.
Although not entirely devoid of similarities to the French Les Légions Noires bands of the mid-90s, the music certainly cannot be compared to Vzaéurvbtre, Vagézaryavtre, Dvnaèbkre, or Brenoritvrezorkre. What Life Mutilator (who also plays in bands such as Zweihander and Wulffengard) presents here can best be described as a cross between early Burzum and Judas Iscariot with a touch of Xasthur, Krohm, and even Striborg.
Given the chosen pseudonym and the self-proclaimed themes of self-destruction, homicide, suicide, and misanthropy, the clear lean toward the depressive side of Black Metal was no coincidence. The musician in question has certainly succeeded in evoking a gloomy atmosphere; it also clearly draws on the sound of the very late ’90s through the mid-2000s, a time period long before Life Mutilator’s own birth. Yet he manages to create a very authentic sound, and ‘Ante Satanam Tuam Autodestructionem Pone’ could easily have been released in 1999 or 2002.
If you’re into Black Metal that sounds pretty monotonous at first listen, where the drums and guitars whirl around together to support the tortured vocals, then this is definitely a demo worth checking out. Despite the unpronounceable name and song titles (what on earth does ‘Phataghatasatasfrèghekhlagimorferphykosfrehm’ even mean?), this is a solid start for the band.
