Anyone who has read some of my reviews before may have noticed that I can be quite critical when it comes to Death Metal. I’m tired of mid-tempo, boring Death Metal, and passion and creativity in the genre have become a rare commodity. Fortunately, though, there are still bands like Vomit Mass who prove that I shouldn’t turn my back on the genre entirely. These Greeks recorded this first demo live in their rehearsal room, and although it sounds absolutely killer, you can really hear the raw energy of such a frenzied rehearsal session.

Not quite original, but in this case: who give a flying fuck. This is the sort of Death Metal that comes from a Punk/Grindcore background, with a fierce and powerful drive that is felt throughout the full 16+ minutes. The constant upbeat tempo is what mainly gives this a youthful character, but it is not only the merciless barrage of fast drums, it comes with buzzing guitars and some deliciously rabid vocals.

While bands like Autopsy and especially Repulsion are evidently one of the band’s main sources of inspiration, ‘No God, Just Rot!’ positions itself nicely in the middle Bastard Priest, Excoriate and Maim. This trio of bands are inextricably linked to the emergence of a new generation of Death Metal bands that sprang up in the run-up to the 2010s. Many of the bands from that wave have since disappeared and been forgotten, or have themselves grown old and fat, and the Death Metal scene as a whole has become lazy and complacent. But Vomit Mass is part of a small group that is keeping the genre alive, a breath of fresh air that it so desperately needs.

It’s still only early 2026, but ‘No God, Just Rot!’ is one I expect to see on my list of favourite demos by the end of the year. A very good and convincing demo!
