Vomit Messiah – Demo

Artist: Vomit Messiah
Country: Spain
Label: In Pulverem Mortis Productions
Formats: Demo Tape
Year: 2023

Just as the band needed remarkably few words to title this debut demo, it can sometimes be as easy to write a review. This brand-new trio from Spain, whose band members go by names like “Mephitic Messiah of the Northern Gate and Four Winds”, doesn’t mince words at any point: not only is the title obvious, the band name and pseudonyms already give away quite a bit of what to expect from them…

Although it is a niche scene in an already small genre, Spain still has a fair tradition of offering the nastiest Black/Death Metal. Obvious names like Teitanblood and Proclamation will be the ones that first come to mind for most, but newcomers like Vomit Messiah prove that there is still a certain need on the Iberian peninsula to make Black/Death Metal just a little bit more disgusting than the average Belphegor record. Although on ‘Demo’ the throttle is certainly pressed a bit deeper here and there, the pace still seems to be generally a bit slower than on the majority of their counterparts. This gives the whole thing a more sluggish and at times even doomier character. This does not detract in any way from the overall noise that rubs up against the usual masters of the genre.

It goes without saying that bands like Beherit, Blasphemy, Goatlord, Von and compatriots Teitanblood and Proclamation have provided the necessary inspiration. However, the battering overall sound, with the roaring bass guitar and somewhat rickety drums providing the main foundation, has a certain rocking vibe that, together with the somewhat slower tempos, makes for a somewhat more unique sound than the average.

So those still looking for their raw underground metal fix can have their fun with Vomit Messiah. In just over 15 minutes, you get a steamroller-load of uncomplicated primitive brutality thrown at you. And all of that on a cassette tape for just €5.50, available via the label’s Bandcamp page. Knock yourself out!

  1. This album is so Black/Death Metal: barbaric, intense and chaotic, in the vein of old Sarcofago or Sadistik.

With songs like “Rotten Vulva of the Monumental Nightbeast”, what else can we expect?
