I really love an awesome bit of raw and nihilistic piece of blackmetal. And I do not care about production or sound quality, I even don’t care about playing skills of the bandmember(s). It’s the music, the atmosphere and the dark feeling they create that counts. But when I got this demo tape of UK band Odium, I thought for a while that I might have to change those ideas. Since this is just, well, I don’t have a good word for this, boring seems to be the word that fits best. On the front cover there is stated “Minimalistic Raw Black Metal”, well minimalistic it is! This word is simply used for covering the incapability of playing any instrument properly.
Well, imagine some kids playing on guitars and drums and they really slowed it down to a sleepy speed. After two “songs” I’ve already heard it. I haven’t got anything so damn boring as this in years. But the guitar parts are actually quite good, but so damn slow that it can’t hold my attention any moment. If it was played a little faster or had some back up of great drums (and bass?) it really had some great atmosphere and hypnotising riffs. But this just irritates the shit out of me. At the end of the tape the music becomes some more interesting but it’s never something decent. Maybe I just simply don’t understand this kind of music at all, but I’m sure I will never play this tape again, and put far away in my collection.
