Over the past few years, I have learned a thing or two about video games that I have never even seen in my entire life. There is a whole world of “gaming-nerd Black Metal” that have chosen video games like Elder Scrolls as their main inspiration. As an old fart, I can’t really comment on it because, of course, I don’t understand any of this stuff. Admittedly, it took some getting used to seeing something other than Satan, Lord Of The Rings or general misanthropy reflected in Black Metal, but by now I’ve gotten used to it. Still, I also had to look up “Aurbis”, which apparently means some kind of universe or cosmos in Elder Scrolls. Now you guys know that too.

Daedric Chamber has already been featured on these pages a few times and I have grown a slight fondness of this one-man band. Because fortunately, if you, like me, couldn’t care less about video games, there is still the music that we can enjoy, regardless of our personal interests. Snitz (also in Pissrot and the enjoyable Wizardkeep project, among others) has crafted a complete little musical world for himself with Daedric Chamber. He uses Raw yet Atmospheric Black Metal as the basis but doesn’t shy away from using some keyboards and Dungeon Synth elements in the music. ‘Aurbis Unending’ is another chapter in the ever-expanding discography that builds on the same musical formula.

But, it would not do justice to the music by merely portraying it as “Raw Black Metal mixed with Dungeon Synth”, there are literally hundreds of projects that have settled down in that niche. With Daedric Chamber Snitz definitely shows there is more to discover here. The great dynamics from the blistering and blasting speed of the Raw Black Metal parts are a huge contrast to the dreamy ending part of this EP that consists mainly out of piano and dreamy keyboards (although provided with harsh vocals). It is in these dynamics and the way he weaves almost midi-sound like melodies into the music that Snitz shows his impeccable sense for song writing.

If you have enjoyed his earlier work, than this latest EP is just another one to check out. For now this has only been released digitally on the band’s Bandamp page and a few other streaming services, but it is still worth to spend at least those 20 minutes on. In the meantime keep your eyes peeled for the split LP with the French Duelliste, a project of Carcasse Enchaînée of Cachot d’Effroi.
