Although ‘Demo MMXXIV’ has been released under the Vengeance Sorcery banner, it is the sole product of Deathwalker (also Nihil Invocation). On this recording he is responsible for all instruments, vocals and the production. As Vengeance Sorcery normally operates as a duo, it is plausible that this recording is a home demo acting as a kind of pre-production for an upcoming new release yet to materialize. Carefully exploring the waters for what’s to come…
The band’s last offering was their full-length album from 2022 ‘Betrothing Spirits At Nightfall’ (Nuclear War Now! Productions), that in turn followed-up a series of interesting and overall captivating demo tapes. Yet, judging from this 1-track demo it feels that this untitled song is not just a mere continuation on that firm base. It is clear that Deathwalker used all of the cornerstones present on the previously released material, but the outcome is significantly different.
Whereas the majority of the previous releases were bass-heavy and doomy in nature, especially present on ‘Betrothing Spirits At Nightfall’. As if a slightly more Punk-infused Beherit went on a rehearsal doing Reverend Bizarre tracks, or vice versa. This new track is more firmly rooted in the classic Black Metal tradition. The overall oppressing atmosphere and the eerie melodies both go well with the brisker pace and a more traditional Black Metal vocal approach. Still, the music has an overarching primal feeling, not too many bells and whistles, but it is clear that this song is Vengeance Sorcery’s most orthodox sounding track so far. Time will tell what this means for the duo’s future material, but if this is the blueprint then we can prepare for a firm change in direction that still pays homage to Vengeance Sorcery’s musical origins.
