‘Void MMXXV’ is the debut demo from a Finnish duo that got together somewhere earlier this year, but seemingly they didn’t need much time to wrap their first ideas up. Both musicians are new to me and have a resume that contains bands that I never heard of before, so, Deathfuckingwound completely got me by surprise.
On a musical level, this band very much lives up to their name. ‘Void MMXXV’ is a complete attack on all your senses. Mixing Death Metal, Black Metal, Grindcore and Noise into a whirling shitstorm that keeps battering your ear drums, from start to finish. The label of service, Iron Corpse, describes it as being suitable for fans of Teitanblood, Caustic Wound, Primitive Warfare and Antichrist Siege Machine. And although these comparisons put forward by labels are often primarily intended as a sales incentive, this time it’s 100% accurate.
Just imagine a suffocating barrage of intense riffing, non-stop pummelling drums and wild barking vocals, pretty much how it would sound like if you’d listen to the latest albums by Primitive Warfare and Caustic Wound at the same time. Or, if you’re a bit more old school than that, another pretty fitting comparison is when you’d play pre-‘Warmaster’ Bolt Thrower on double speed, or switch to 45 RPM. Still, this Finnish twosome knows how to still keep everything within the constraints of what is musically acceptable. A perfect display of craftsmanship, walking the thin line that keeps Black/Death/Grind from becoming “just” complete nonsense. This is controlled chaos in optima forma.
