Blood Curse is a trio that has been around for about a decade and released a good few of short players as well as a full-length album in 2018 (released through Stormspell Records, Witch Pyre Records and Witchcraft Records), but I honestly did not spend too much attention to it. Afterwards the band returned with a digital EP in 2021 and they now did the same with ‘Unholy Trinity’. Compared to that 2021 released ‘Winter’s Dream’ EP, the least we can tell is that this newest piece of work is wrapped in a much more attractive cover.
On a musical level, at least compared to the ‘Sorceress’-album (2018) and ‘Winter’s Dream’, ‘Unholy Trinity’ sounds a lot more primitive. Those earlier recordings were considerably more epic and, in a way, more balanced – “sophisticated” is quite the wrong word here. Not only the recording and production are a clear step towards a more raw kind of approach, also the playing and overall song writing firmly lean into that direction.
As a whole, this EP, more than ever before, sounds like a blending of Witchfinder General, Pentagram, Manilla Road and Angelwitch. As a result, the band comes closest sounding like The Gates Of Slumber. At least, on their earlier recordings, originally released through Final Chapter Records/Iron Kodex Records. Not in the least because of the vocal resemblance with The Gates Of Slumber’s Karl Simon’s, sometimes off key and most of the times rather impure. While some people might be annoyed by it, which is not entirely incomprehensible, for me it adds an extra element of authenticity to the music. Something that certainly makes it way more convincing.
