‘Grotesque Prosection’ is the debut EP from a new Finnish band that was released on cassette tape, CD and as a nice looking 7” EP as a joint feat of Extremely Rotten Productions and Headsplit Records, each of them covering their own native territories/continents. Blisterous might be a new band, but none of the involved musicians are actually new to the game of Death Metal/Grindcore or Extreme Metal in general. With experience in bands such as Devil’s Vomit, Sadistic Drive and Morbific, it is perhaps not too difficult to guess in which direction we should look for Blisterous.
The majority of the individual musicians’ other/previous experience might be in the same sort of Death Metal/Grindcore, Blisterous by far is the most old school Death/Grind affair. And not only that, it is also their best project – that includes the rather popular Morbific and the solid Sadistic Drive. With three tracks on either side of the EP, totalling about 14 minutes, ‘Grotesque Prosection’ is a deliciously gory piece of Death/Grind that sounds both old school in approach and slightly technical in execution.
Besides the old fashioned choppy riffs and the interesting way they are played and woven together, there’s even a bit of an eerie atmosphere that underpins the music. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that those keyboards are a major part of the music, but it definitely is the icing on the cake that gives Blisterous a bit of a sound of their own. You can actually think of any old gurgling piece of Death/Grind or Goregrind that served as a blueprint for Blisterous, because it’s obviously not miles away from the classic work of Carcass, but throw in a little bit of that atmospheric Acheron/Necrophagia seasoning and you’ve got the exact picture of how these Finns sound. Still not original, but this how this sort of music should sound like. Exceptionally good.
