Although this demo seems to have been in the works for quite some time, this is still a new band for most people. Only those who regularly visit Reddit or Instagram may have come across a few calls for musicians and promotion for the upcoming release of this demo. The time spent on preparation probably involved more line-up issues than actually writing and recording the music, because this British Bestial Black/Death Metal band has clearly never heard of sophistication.
Five tracks, combining a total of just over ten minutes, including a one minute and a half of intro: without even listening to it, this already sets the tenure. And with life playing tricks on you all the time, it is a relief that Sulphuric Deity is just delivering that what you hoped for: no nonsense, unadulterated Bestial Black/Death Metal that would appeal to the fans of … well, basically all the other good bands in the genre.
Almost every band in this particular genre sounds the same, but that’s exactly where the charm lies – at least to me. Alright, the one sounds a bit sharper or a bit more chaotic, but I love the predictability and consistency of the genre. After the initial start of it all, by bands like Beherit, Impaled Nazarene and Blasphemy, the genre hasn’t evolved a tiny bit. The most exotic things are adding a bit of extra flavours here and there, but the very core of the genre has never changed. So, this band, entering the international Bestial Black/Death Metal stage with a first demo, sounds pretty much the same as most of their peers. Great!
Yet, there is a way to distinguish bands that are true to the game and those who are there as well, but seemingly don’t know shit. This sort of music has everything to do with blind rage and furious whirlwinds of instruments. But it’s certainly not all that. What separates the men from the boys is a true capacity of writing memorable riffs, even if they sound rancid and/or simple: just pounding the skins and tormenting the strings is not cutting it. A certain degree of control in all the madness, that’s what it is about.
And, to cut a long story short: Sulphuric Deity has what it takes. A rather sharp edged take on the genre, but a very recognizable one that makes every fan of the genre a happy camper. The band has self-released this demo tape in a rather small quantity, so anyone who is already starting to salivate can take their pick.
