‘Coffin Of The Corrupted Dead’ is this band’s fourth album, but even with the rather impressive back catalogue of Podridão, most of their material seem to not have reached a large audience yet. As a European, it might be a bit difficult to pass judgement on this with regard to the North American market, but I’m quite sure that both involved labels, Iron Fortress Records (USA) and Kill Again Records (Brazil), are more focussed on their native markets than the one abroad. Be that as it may, the band doesn’t seem to care and just carry on with their no-nonsense Death Metal.
Although the lyrical content and the artwork might imply otherwise, this is the sort of Death Metal that I associate with quite some other things than gore and zombies. Personally I would file this under “Feel Good Death Metal”.
Just as with their previous releases, ‘Coffin Of The Corrupted Dead’ is a very solid affair. These guys definitely know their craft and are even able to take their brand of old school Death Metal up a step with each consecutive release. The band’s sound is still very much based on old Gorefest, Cancer, Autopsy and Incubus and seem to be averse to adding anything that sounds even remotely modern. That means that this fourth full-length offering is mostly aimed for those who are either around for a long time already or those who learned to delve into Death Metal’s formative days. Yet, even when the music, for the most part, is riff-heavy and not quite technical or too complex, the band plays around with tempos and variations in their guitar work. This dynamic way of song writing makes it even more authentic, as the vast majority of today’s Death Metal bands that claim to play ‘old school’ actually mean ‘boring’.
‘Coffin Of The Corrupted Dead’ has enough to offer to keep you entertained for a good couple of spins. It certainly won’t turn out to be a prize-winning record, but exactly because it doesn’t go along with the flavour of the day, it feels like a breath of fresh air in the currently stagnant Death Metal scene. It may not be a runaway hit, but it’s a pleasant listen and completely unpretentious: which is why this one’s going on the “Feel Good Death Metal”-list.
