Over the course of just a few years, Geheimnisvoll has emerged as one of the most celebrated Black Metal bands on the North American continent. Although ‘Pale Triumph Of The Hidden Flame’ is only the second full-length album, this one-man band has managed to make quite a name for itself through a considerable number of splits and EPs. And while underground hypes are often accompanied by lacklustre musical performances, that is certainly not the case with Geheimnisvoll; this latest album, released earlier this year, is further irrefutable proof, a strong statement, that Geheimnisvoll is at the forefront of the current USBM movement for good reason.
Although fairly consistent in style, Geheimnisvoll’s Sceadugenga (also featured in Grundhyrde, Åndutsyn, Autumn Strife, Wuldorgast, Deogen, and Waelwang, among others) has managed to steer his flagship through increasingly melodic waters. That evolution is also evident on this latest album, where Sceadugenga seems to be pulling out all the stops and showcasing his best work across the board.
As a whole, the most prominent changes can be found in the slightly more coherent musicianship and the overall tighter production. Sceadugenga put together a profoundly more melodic approach with a sound that amplifies exactly that aspect of the overall experience. A grander sound that is brimming with melodies, but without getting into bombastic territories or a pretentious display of plasticness. That’s something worth emphasizing, because the riffs and vocals are still as cold and sharp as ever, deeply rooted in the contemporary Raw Black Metal aesthetic. But the interaction between melody and the breakneck tempos, combined with the ever-screeching vocals, is now better balanced than ever, making ‘Pale Triumph Of The Hidden Flame’ perhaps the most complete work Sceadugenga has created with Geheimnisvoll. Some might argue that the album lacks any clear highlights, and while there may be some truth to that, in this case it could also be interpreted as an album with a highly cohesive character and a strong consistency. It really just depends on your perspective or how you choose to listen to it.
Fans of blistering Black Metal equipped with thick layers of melody and often astonishing dynamics, yet which doesn’t sound like Emperor or Vargrav, will undoubtedly find this second Geheimnisvoll album to their liking.
