As previously noted and reported, the Silesia region of Poland is a hotbed of uncompromising Extreme Metal. In recent months, a great many bands from the area have managed to attract attention with excellent recordings and, in many cases, spectacular live shows. And as is always the case: a good example sets a precedent. It was only a matter of time before the first young bands followed in the footsteps of the more established names. Morgarath are certainly not the first, but they may well be the latest addition to the local scene. They’re now making a bold entrance with ‘Onward To Extermination’, their digitally released debut demo.
Let’s start with the conclusion: ‘Onwards To Extermination’ is an enjoyable and promising start for Morgarath. It’s far from flawless, but it brings a smile of satisfaction to my face. The chosen pseudonyms, such as ‘Necrohades’ and ‘Bestial Devastator’, are hopefully a sign of just how seriously they take their role as the younger generation of metalheads. For however young these lads may be, they draw their musical influences from well before their birth: old Slayer, Morbid Angel, early Sodom, a touch of old Dark Angel, Poison and even Mayhem’s primitive early recordings seem to have provided some inspiration.
The execution still leaves a bit to be desired here and there; in particular, the transitions from one idea to the next are a bit clunky. There are good riffs, catchy, wild passages and the vocals sound nicely raw, but sometimes the tracks are put together just a bit too chaoticly. On the other hand, that certainly contributes to a sense of authenticity and youthful eagerness. It’s certainly not down to a lack of fresh energy, talent or an overall understanding of old-school Extreme Metal. In fact, I’m looking forward to the next release from this young quartet!
