In just a few years, Abhorrent Execration was founded in 2022, this French duo has built up quite a discography. Starting with two demos, the band is now releasing its third EP, ‘Malicious Eternal’, so there’s certainly no shortage of perseverance and dedication here. Musically, however, I hadn’t been particularly impressed by Abhorrent Execration before. Although it had everything I typically enjoy hearing in the wilder variants of Black/Death Metal, the execution just didn’t seem quite convincing enough.
But as the saying goes, practice makes perfect – and this latest release from the lads certainly proves that. Because, full credit where credit is due, this really is a significant step in the right direction and is undoubtedly the best Abhorrent Execration has produced to date. Although nothing has really changed in the way these lads shape their musical escapades, it now feels as though the pieces of the jigsaw are simply falling into place exactly as they should. The foundation of the raw, basic principles of Blasphemy, Beherit and the like, combined with the bass-heavy approach of early Barathrum and Necromantia (they still operate without a guitarist), now comes across better, and above all, the heavier production really enhances the musical formula.
In just over 17 minutes, we are taken through a mix of slow, ominous passages and fierce, chaotic sections, which together create a dynamic whole and mean that Abhorrent Execration can now begin to hold its own against the better bands in the doomier realms of Black/Death Metal. Fans of Witchcraft and its many offshoots will certainly find this to their liking.
