Blight Psalm seems to be the result of the involved musicians’ desire to do something different from Death Metal-oriented music. These Spaniards are also active in bands like Siegehammer, Rotten Cavern and Cerebral Curse. But, honestly, after listening to ‘Veneration Of Filthbone Grace’ it is clear that being a fairly competent Death Metal musician doesn’t necessarily mean that you are also suited to playing Black Metal.
In fact, ‘Verneration Of Filthbone Grace’ is a thoroughly boring affair. Not only does the Black Metal as a whole lack all feeling and atmosphere, but the music sounds massively indecisive. The musician’s background in Death Metal is never fully away, there’s some slower Sludge-elements to it and on top of that, the band seems to flirt with a bit of Funeral Doom as well. As a result ‘Veneration Of Filthbone Grace’ feels like a loose cannon on deck, a ship without sails and no captain, just plain unruly and undisciplined. There’s just a bit too many different ideas and nothing that is able to keep them together. Whether that is the result of a lack of understanding of the genre(s), an overall rush job or a classic example of four different people, each with their own perspective and desires. Regardless of the exact reason, this first EP (or demo, rather) offers basically nothing to enjoy, it merely shows that this band was definitely not ready for recording. Blight Psalm is even already lined-up for live shows, but if you’d ask me they’d better use their time and energy in perfecting their craft…
