Although these pages focus primarily on Black and Death Metal, that is certainly not the intention per se. The spectrum of Extreme Metal (or music, if you want to take a broader view) offers more than just those two styles. The fact that the majority of the articles fall within that remit stems mainly from the fact that, as cherry-pickers, we find the most satisfying creativity within the confines of those genres. Naturally, this is subjective and personal taste undoubtedly plays a part. Nevertheless, a good dose of Grindcore can still appeal to me, but it simply has to be really good. As is the case here with the Danish band Fosse Septique.
Following a title-less demo and a rather obscure split release, both from 2024, the band have now come up with this new EP. Whilst the debut demo was released on cassette tape via Headsplit Records and Unholy Domain, the impure pairing of Extremely Rotten Productions and Me Saco Un Ojo have now taken charge of these six new tracks. It may well be, of course, that this band has flown completely under the radar, but even readers who aren’t necessarily into Grindcore/Goregrind will recognise the drummer as a familiar face. After all, multi-instrumentalist and hardcore veteran Ugur Yildirim is also behind the kit for Taphos and Ascendency, and previously played with Ultra Silvam, Hyperdontia and Septage; although the latter also falls under the Grindcore banner.
You can really hear that this relatively new band is captained by an experienced frontman. With an audible fondness for bands such as Last Days Of Humanity, Dead Infection and early Regurgitate, Fosse Septique’s thunderous noise is both infectious and delightfully familiar. No effort whatsoever is made to bring a fresh sound to the genre; instead, this takes the listener back to the latter half of the 1990s: a time dominated by small labels such as Malodorous Mangled Innards (MMI), Bizarre Leprous Productions, Obscene Productions, Regurgitated Semen Records, Poserslaughter Records, Obliteration Records, Ax/ction Records and countless others. I’m guessing that many older readers probably still have a good collection of those good old 7″ singles and demo tapes lying around in the loft. Listening to ‘Septicity’ comes pretty close to evoking that sort of nostalgic mood.
The rolling drums, sawing riffs and gurgling vocals give a nice warm and familiar feeling; that snapping snare drum is more than a little reminiscent of that old Last Days Of Humanity stuff, isn’t it? At the same time, it sounds heavier than many an old recording, showing that Fosse Septique is clearly a child of the present day. Here, you can clearly hear Ugur’s experience from his many (former) bands (including Sakatat) seeping through. It is partly for this reason that ‘Septicity’, in either cassette or 7” EP form, is sure to be warmly welcomed by many (former) fans of all the more brutal Grindcore-like genres. If only for the sake of nostalgia.
