The Mexican band In Obscurity Revealed have been making a name for themselves for over ten years now and, following a number of EPs and their debut album ‘Glorious Impurity’, released in 2018, have now reached their second album. Their previous releases were put out by a huge number of different labels in various versions and formats, but they have now opted for the Mexican label Personal Records, which seems to signal the end of their working relationship with Blood Harvest. Musically, however, the band has made few changes; ‘Caustic Maelstrom’ sounds exactly like the Death Metal of In Obscurity Revealed’s previous album.
Personally I ran into the band when they released their ‘Grim Fumes Of Revelation’ 7” EP through the aforementioned Blood Harvest label from Sweden, who, around that time, started to release a couple of interesting 7” EP’s. As they’d piqued my interest, I kept an eye on the band, but just like with a band such as Infinitum Obscure, also Mexican and with a Blood Harvest background, the band didn’t really seem to get off the ground. Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why that is. It’s easy to point the finger at their origins or their affiliation with a label, but in any case, it’s not hard to conclude that it’s not down to the music.
‘Caustic Maelstrom’ is yet another excellent album on which the band presents a blend of Death Metal with plenty of room for Black Metal elements that create the necessary atmosphere. Although the music is audibly rooted in the old-school values of the Death Metal genre, with Morbid Angel and Deicide easily discernible, the band sounds very contemporary. This is not only down to the strong production, which does excellent justice to all the details and depth of the music, but above all because this kind of music is well-received in the current Extreme Metal scene. Throw the ingenuity of Immolation and the riffs of Dead Congregation into the mix, and you’ll have a very good idea of what In Obscurity Revealed’s sophomore album sounds like. You might argue that they have relatively little of their own input, but the quality is of such a high standard that this is very easily forgiven.
So, if we can rule out the simply excellent music as a possible reason, then I think that In Obscurity Revealed’s lack of global recognition (if you’d even call it that) might best be attributed to the sheer volume of releases these days. Still, I’d actually recommend that anyone who enjoys exciting Death Metal in the vein of Dead Congregation, Grave Miasma and Cruciamentum to give ‘Caustic Maelstrom’ a go.
