The cover artwork alone of this 45RPM 7’ EP released by Zombi Danz Records is already worth a look for those who like Southeast Asian Black/Death Metal. The obvious reference to one of the founding fathers of the scene there makes it little surprising that this Malaysian band pays unadulterated homage to Impiety.
Apart from an intro (‘Intromancy’) and an outro (‘Outromancy’), this debut 7″ EP brings two tracks that leave little to be guessed at or desired. The occult Black Metal, with sinister keyboards, can definitely be placed in line with the band’s so adored Impiety and Abhorer. However, ‘Ceremonial Oath’ sounds a lot less chaotic than the average of both Impiety or Abhorer, especially the keyboards make the whole thing a lot more atmospheric. This actually makes a comparison with bands like Mortuary Drape, Mystifier, Samael, Varathron and the current Belgian scene with bands like Phlegethon’s Majesty, Moenen Of Xezbeth and the likes even more appropriate. The steamy and charmingly lumbering drumming, in turn, is reminiscent of Archgoat’s blunter work, which actually seems to have come full circle.
This is a short but very sweet 7” EP that is more than worth picking up from one of the many quality distros around. It might not be bringing you anything new, but in turn it serves you with some of the best authentic occult Southeast Asian Black/Death Metal around. So, yes, full circle for sure ‘Ceremonial Oath’ ticks all the right boxes.
