Now that Cursed Excruciation seems to have entered a somewhat quieter period, the sole musician behind this band has turned his attention back to his other projects. Recently, we saw a polished version of an old Clavis Inferni demo come out, and earlier a split 7″ EP by Trance Of The Undead with Messe Mortuaire. From Trance Of The Undead, also the namesake of the inspired musician, we now have this new EP, which, like much of his other work, was released via Unpure Records.
In my review of the Clavis Inferni demo mentioned above, I pointed out that although everything Trance Of The Undead presents us with is of decent or even high quality, the need to do so under different names escapes me a little. While perhaps not 100% identical, most of his work is uniform enough to be lumped together under one umbrella.
That is once again the first thought that crosses my mind when I listen to ‘Dawn Of Resurrection’. The occult Black Metal with strong evil Death Metal connotations, backed by humming, ghostly keyboards, combines the occult vibe of bands such as Mystifier, Samael and Varathron with the somewhat heavier edge of a band like Imprecation. In that sense, “Dawn Of Resurrection” is not much different from the previous work under this name, but the main distinction lies in a slightly more effective production that gives the music a bit more urgency. It goes without saying that I am not averse to a raw edge to music, quite the contrary, I would say, but the extent to which it is applied on this EP does more justice to the songs and especially the atmosphere. The keyboards in the background are now more subtle and the (strong) riffs are also slightly more muted, as a result of which more attention is paid to the hissing and sibilant vocals, which at times are reminiscent of Beherit or Void Meditation Cult. This kind of music relies heavily on atmosphere and experience, and in that respect, this is undoubtedly Trance Of The Undead’s best work to date.
