After two demos and an EP, the French duo that is Abhorrent Execration returns with yet another EP that, for now, is only digitally available through the band’s Bandcamp page. Under the moniker of ‘Only bass is real’ the band gives away what they are all about, if you haven’t heard any of their earlier output, that is…
Although I always loved their concept of doomish sort of Bestial Black/Death Metal with a bass guitar that takes center stage. Yet, honestly, the band has yet to convince me with their take on that musical idea. Just like the previous output, ‘Atavistic Voracity’ offers very little that allows their music to sound exciting or captivating. Whether it is the absence of riffs or just the monotony that exudes from it, I don’t know. Perhaps it is a bit of both, especially in combination with a surprising lack of hooks, atmosphere or overall feeling, or basically anything else that usually makes music memorable.
I am not saying this is exceptionally bad or that you shouldn’t spend your money, time and energy on checking out Abhorrent Execration, as they definitely have some good ideas scattered all over the place and their concept really has potential. But it is also quite obvious that the two musicians are either not qualified for the job or that they need more demoing to further develop their ideas and musicianship. Another possibility, of course, is that it is just me not fully being able to wrap my head around what these guys are doing.
Regardless, if you are interesting in some bass-heavy rumblings with rather simple drums and hoarse vocals in rehearsal-tape quality, this could be your next stop. In a certain way it has its charm, but not so much for the musical content. So, quality wise, don’t expect anything that sounds like Beherit, Barathrum or Necromantia.
