Purulent Remains – Abhorrent Putrefication [7″ EP]

Artist: Purulent Remains
Country: Spain
Label: Extremely Rotten Productions / Headsplit Records
Formats: 7″ EP
Year: 2025

Although the band had already released two demo tapes (or cassette EP’s) in 2022 and 2023 and both were featured on the Bringer Of Gore-released ‘Worm-Eaten Corpse’ compilation LP, I only ran into Purulent Remains through the split 7” EP with Horrible, released in spring last year. But that was all I needed, because I instantly loved their bloody and gurgling Death Metal, which was cast in a solid Grindcore mould. This 7” EP was released a couple of months ago through a joint effort between Extremely Rotten Productions and Headsplit Records.

What I liked the most from the previous recordings is that it showed that this Spanish band’s brand of Grindcore infused Death Metal was actually not going into violent bursts of blast beats, but still kept the music interesting throughout. Usually it is the interplay between faster parts and the sections that are a bit more grooving that gives this music its overall appeal. Not that Purulent Remains lacks fast, blasting parts completely, but those eerie, almost Nerophagia-like riffs and the slower pace gives the music a relatively occult vibe. Maybe not too surprising as one of the two involved musicians is also active in Nigromancia. But, don’t let that fool you, this is still all about the gory side of Death Metal with (partially) pitchshifted vocals and juicy, chopping riffs and ditto rhythms.

In just over 11 minutes the Spanish duo delivers another nice bit of Death/Grind that would appeal to fans of the old gods like Impetigo, Carcass, Necrony, Dead Infection and Regurgitate as well as newer kids on the block such as Pharmacist, Septage and Fluids. Oh, and guys, please keep recording and releasing EP’s, that works so much better than long players.
