If the word ‘bestial’ features in both your band name and the title of your debut EP, it’s not particularly difficult to guess what musical direction this Thai band is heading in. On top of that, there’s also the artwork, which features a black-and-white pen-and-ink drawing of skulls and death that has a distinctly Chris Moyen-esque feel to it.
‘Bestial Endsieg’ indeed is a thoroughly rough piece of music, heavily leaning on traditions set by the likes of Blasphemy and further perfected by bands such as Proclamation, Bestial Warlust, Impiety and Black Witchery. Bestial Catacombs can more or less be positioned in the middle of those bands, borrowing from each of them a bit that leads to a relentless barrage of riffs and barking vocals. The drumming on ‘Bestial Endsieg’ is equally suffocating, a fast pace that shows very little versatility, but that helps the music excel in utter barbarity. However, what really characterises this EP, that consists out of four tracks and clocks in around 15 minutes, are the utterly frenzied and possessed vocals, which make the music an even more memorable experience. It may be short, but that makes it even more lethal: just the way I prefer it!
Overall, it’s an EP that shows these are musicians who know exactly what they’re doing. That’s perhaps not so surprising when you consider that, whilst this may be a new band, it consists of musicians who have already earned their spurs with bands such as Nocturnal Damnation, Shambles, Savage Deity, Genocidal Sodomy and a whole host of other bands with deep roots in the Thai underground Extreme Metal scene. That makes Bestial Catacombs a band to watch out for among fans of the finest, most ruthless and unforgiving Bestial Black/Death Metal.
